Rising Star: The Journey of Caleb in the WSET Youth Program

Workforce Solutions East Texas • Feb 20, 2024

Meet Caleb Sykes, a young individual who found his passion not in a classroom but in the hands-on experience of an industrial environment. Unlike many who pursue certifications, Caleb was determined to dive into industrial maintenance.

Caleb's journey led him to LeBus International, where he completed a youth On-The-Job Training (OJT) program. Caleb took on the role of a Machine Maintenance Worker. Despite his initially reserved nature, Caleb quickly gained confidence and proved himself to be an exceptional worker.

His supervisor at LeBus International shared glowing remarks after just the first month of training, noting Caleb's exceptional job performance, quick learning, and ability to thrive under pressure. As the months passed, Caleb's commitment to LeBus International only deepened, culminating in a final assessment that praised his outstanding dedication and exceptional training over the six months.

Caleb's success story continues. As a testament to his hard work and dedication, he continues to be employed at LeBus International, where he now plays a vital role in training new employees in various areas. Caleb Sykes' story is an inspiring example of how determination, hands-on experience, and a supportive work environment can lead to a successful and fulfilling career path.

As summer approaches, students across Texas eagerly anticipate a break from textbooks and classrooms. But for some, summer is not just about relaxation; it's an opportunity to gain valuable work experience through the Summer Earn and Learn (SEAL) program. Let's dive into what SEAL is all about and how it benefits students with disabilities. SEAL is a collaborative effort between Texas Workforce Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VR) and local workforce boards. Its primary aim is to provide students with disabilities the chance to acquire essential job skills and experience through summer employment. But it's more than just a summer job—it's a comprehensive program that equips students with the tools they need to navigate the world of work. One of the key components of SEAL is its personalized approach. Students work closely with VR Counselors to identify their areas of interest and career goals. This ensures that their summer job aligns with their aspirations, setting the stage for meaningful learning experiences. The collaboration doesn't stop there. Workforce boards and Business Relations Coordinators join forces to match students with employers in industries relevant to their interests. This strategic partnership ensures that students gain practical experience and develop transferable skills that will serve them well in their future careers. But what sets SEAL apart is its focus on empowerment and support. Job Skills Trainers are available to provide additional assistance to students who may need extra support in learning tasks on the job. This personalized support ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed and grow during their summer employment. Moreover, Workforce Solutions East Texas offers pre-employment training to prepare students for the workforce. From practicing "soft skills" like communication and teamwork to understanding employment documentation, this training equips students with the knowledge they need to hit the ground running. For students with disabilities, SEAL is more than just a summer job—it's a pathway to independence, confidence, and future success. By providing meaningful work experiences and essential skills training, SEAL unlocks opportunities for students, empowering them to reach their full potential.
